Mental health matters — wherever you are. Whether you’re feeling a little off balance or managing a long-term condition, knowing how to get support in the French healthcare system can make all the difference.
In France, mental health is taken seriously, and there are several ways to access care — from speaking with your local GP to urgent intervention in times of crisis. Here’s a friendly guide to understanding how it works, what’s available, and where to turn if you or someone you love needs help.
💬 Feeling Anxious or Depressed?
If you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, or feeling low, your first port of call is your médecin traitant (GP). This is your registered doctor — and they’re your gateway to mental health care in France.
Here’s what your GP can help with:
- Listening to and assessing your emotional and mental well-being.
- Referring you to a psychiatrist, psychologist, or mental health nurse.
- Prescribing medication such as antidepressants, anti-anxiety meds, or sleep aids.
- Offering follow-up appointments to monitor your progress.
💡 Tip: Don’t be afraid to open up about how you’re feeling. Whether the problem feels small or overwhelming, your GP is there to support you — not judge.
🧠 Managing a Chronic Mental Health Condition
If you live with a chronic mental illness such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or long-term depression, France has a support system in place.
Here’s what care can look like:
- A psychiatrist will typically oversee your treatment, making regular assessments and adjusting medications as needed.
- Your médecin traitant may also manage your prescriptions if your condition is stable.
- Mental health nurses (infirmiers psychiatriques) can visit you at home to administer injections, check on your mental state, and ensure your treatment is working.
💡 Care is usually collaborative — psychiatrists, therapists, and nurses often work together to support you holistically.
🚨 In a Mental Health Crisis?
If your mental state is deteriorating, you’re experiencing suicidal thoughts, or feel at risk in any way, please don’t wait.
Here’s what to do:
- Call 15 (the French emergency services).
- Or go directly to your nearest emergency hospital (service des urgences).
You’ll be seen by a medical team, including a psychiatrist, who will assess whether hospitalisation or a medication change is necessary.
⚠️ You have the right to refuse treatment — unless you’re considered unable to make decisions safely for yourself, in which case a trusted third party (family member, friend, police, etc.) may intervene.
💶 What About the Cost?
Most mental health services in France are covered by the public healthcare system, including appointments with your GP and psychiatric treatment.
However:
- Psychologists in private practice may charge fees that are only partially reimbursed or not reimbursed at all.
- Be sure to ask upfront about fees and reimbursement.
If you’re worried about the financial side, your GP can help you access care within the public system.
